When customers are looking for a local online business that might be able to offer what they need, they are often unknowingly being quite judgemental whilst carrying out their research. Typically, someone will search online, click on the search results and come face to face with your website. Once the page is loaded, do they see a boring generic screen with options, or are they hit between the eyes with a striking visual? Having high quality images helps grab people's attention and helps portray a much better image of you and your business! How often have you stumbled upon a search result that you were instantly turned off by due to a poor homemade website or unprofessional looking Facebook page? We shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, but first impressions count for a lot - especially if you want to stand out.

Using quality, professional photography across your website, social media and other digital channels not only catches the reader’s interest but also improves your visibility online. Images and video content are one of the most valuable tools for getting better results in general from your content. Visitors to your website or socials are more likely to engage with content if it’s paired with an image and are more likely to remember what they have read or heard.

There are three options when it comes to acquiring high quality images. You can (1) use stock images, (2) attempt to take your own pictures or (3) hire a professional like me. Original photography is more authentic, will guarantee no one else is using the same image and, again, creates a better first impression to potential customers - unlike the below example! Here you can see how the use of corny, cringe-worthy stock images may not create the right impression of your business instead coming off as disingenuine. They could end up doing more harm than good!

Regardless of the product or service you're offering or who your customers are, you should not underestimate the importance of professional, good quality photography and how it can help contribute to your success. Incorporating the use of professional photography by someone like myself can help in a number of ways:

Help to Establish your Business Identity

Imagery is a really important part of your brand and how your business communicates with potential customers. Is your business corporate, or more relaxed witty & fun? The imagery (and video) you put out there needs to reflect how you want your customers to see you. Above anything else, it shows you're serious about quality and professionalism.

Making a Good First Impression

As already mentioned above, the images used on your social media channels and your website are often the first impressions of your business. As such, it goes without saying that you need to put your best foot forward to make your business stand out and make a good first impression.

Authenticity Matters

Using actual photos of your staff and premises might seem a minor detail, but it really can go a long way to help potential customers establish a genuine connection with you before meeting them. The use of stock images does not come across authentic and can sometimes lead to people looking elsewhere or failing to pick up the phone altogether. If potential customers cannot get a true feel for what your business is like or whether the service(s) you offer are genuine, they're less likely to make an enquiry. Anyone can use stock images, but it requires a lot more time, effort and thought to use genuine images that are unique to you and what you do.

Incomparable Quality

Despite most mobile phone cameras now producing good quality photos - I will still incorporate the use of a mobile phone camera if the situation suits - you simply cannot compare them with images taken with professional grade equipment such as DSLRs, high quality lenses, additional lighting (if required) not to mention the use of professional editing software to really make your images stand out from the rest.

High quality images stand out from mediocre images and make your business unique and more professional. This can be the difference between someone engaging with your social media, enquiring through your website - or not!
